Top Movie Classics Added To America’s National Film Registry

Basketball documentary HOOP DREAMS, Christmas classic MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET, FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH and footage of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake are among the 25 new entries into America’s National Film Registry.

Every year the Library of Congress names a group of “significant movies” which they preserve in the National Film Registry.

As well as those named above, Librarian of Congress JAMES BILLINGTON has also announced the induction of BUSTER KEATON film THE CAMERAMAN, TOY STORY, THE FRENCH CONNECTION, THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW and GIANT.

The 2005 selections bring the total number of films being preserved by the Library of Congress to 425. The registry was created by Congress in 1989.

In ’Brokeback Mountain,’ Jake Gyllenhaal tests mainstream America’s openness to gay protagonists

In 'Brokeback Mountain,' Jake Gyllenhaal tests mainstream America's openness to gay protagonists Jack Twist is a tall drink of water, a young cowpoke with dreamy eyes who rides rodeo when he can, herds sheep when he has to and plays awful harmonica by the campfire at night. And, oh yes, Jack's in love. With a guy named Ennis. That's right. Jack's in love with a guy. He's a cowboy in love with a cowboy in the 1960s in "Brokeback Mountain," the controversial, critically hailed film from director Ang Lee ("The Ice Storm," "Sense and Sensibility") that opens locally Friday. Known far and wide as

Garcias Lost City Not Found in South America

Garcias Lost City Not Found in South America Andy Garcia may be preparing for the release of his feature directorial debut, The Lost City, but some countries in South America are having none of it. According to a report on movie website Monsters And Critics.com, the film has been banned in parts of South America because it depicts revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara in a negative light. Garcia, who wrote, directed and stars in the film, worked for years to get his film made, only to have it shunned from several film festivals and cinema chains because of how it portrays Che Guevara.

Filmmakers hope Brokeback reaches middle America

Filmmakers hope Brokeback reaches middle America LOS ANGELES -- It has wowed film festivals, won rave reviews and sparked Oscar buzz, but when Brokeback Mountain, aka. the gay cowboy movie, begins playing to general audiences, it faces its toughest challenge yet -- wooing mainstream America. Two of Hollywood's hottest leading men, Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger, risk alienating fans and sending their stars plummeting if, after watching the pair have sex on screen, audiences cannot see them any other way than gay. Winning over middle America is important for the roughly $12.5 million movie because its backer, art house specialist Focus Features,

AMERICA’S APPETITE FOR OIL WILL HAVE TO BE CURBED

AMERICA'S APPETITE FOR OIL WILL HAVE TO BE CURBED Conservatives have denounced the thriller "Syriana," a film that explores the Machiavellian politics of Mideast oil. Pundit Charles Krauthammer, for example, says the movie exports "the most vicious and pernicious mendacities about America to a receptive world." The film, for which George Clooney won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, is definitely a Hollywood version of international politics, complete with caricatures of U.S. political and business leaders and an unbelievably pure oil sheik. But the movie's essence is merely a recounting of recent U.S. history: Consecutive administrations -- Democrat and Republican
