Chelsea seek to crack America

Chelsea are planning to become the most popular European club in America with a new strategic alliance with one of the driving forces behind Major League Soccer (MLS).

The tie-up with AEG, which owns four MLS teams, will give the Premiership champions a foothold in a potentially lucrative market in terms of merchandising.

It is also understood that Chelsea will have first option on a number of young stars playing in the American league, including Freddie Adu.

The highly-rated teenager currently plays for DC United, which along with Houston Dynamo, LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire, are owned by AEG.

‘This is a unique, ground-breaking relationship that not only demonstrates our commitment to the development of US soccer, but will also help Chelsea work towards its aim of becoming the most popular European club in the US, one of our key target markets,’ said the club’s chief executive, Peter Kenyon.

As chief executive of Manchester United, Kenyon masterminded an alliance with baseball team the New York Yankees.

In a telephone conference with reporters, Canales said delegations from countries involved met in Houston with representatives of major oil companies and investment banks interested in the refinery project, which is expected to involve investments of about US$6 billion (euro4.7 billion). Food gets its close-up on ‘Iron Chef America’ Another battle is under way on “Iron Chef America,” due to begin its third season Feb. 26 (Food Network, Sundays at 9 p.m. ET), and challenger Homaro Cantu has already snapped to work with his sous chefs, chopping up the secret ingredient as the one-hour clock dwindles away. Chefs often bring their favorite gadgets to Kitchen Stadium, which in reality is a windowless, surprisingly compact studio in the Food Network’s Manhattan studios, located in the hulking Chelsea Market building. But Cantu, of Chicago’s Moto restaurant, has brought what resembles a high-school chemistry lab. Cantu
