Fire takes break from MLS to take on Club America

While the Fire has had its struggles in Major League Soccer competition, coach Dave Sarachans charges have fared better – with a 4-2-1 record – against normally superior international foes.

Consequently, the exhibition game tonight against Club America of the highly respected Mexican First Division might be considered a no-lose event. A good crowd is expected in the 20,000-seat Toyota Park. The result will not count against the Fire in the MLS standings, and the young players will get some experience sharpening their skills against more established, celebrated players such as Club American goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, defender Antonio Castro and mid-fielder Pavel Pardo, who are fresh from World Cup play.

We always welcome a chance to play against international teams like this – teams we would not normally play in the regular season, Sarachan said. It offers us an opportunity to use some players that may not have seen as many minutes as youd like. At the same time, we want to compete and come away with a good result.

Big guns could fire America

Big guns could fire America America are a decent bet at generally available odds of 5-4 to wrest back the Ryder Cup from Europe at the K Club in Ireland, starting on Friday morning. Having lost four of the past five times, the Americans are underdogs as they try to beat Europe on their home soil for the first time since 1993. However, while much has been made of the four rookies on the US team, the format has the fourball and foursome matches making up the first two days and counting for 16 of the available 28 points. That allows Tom

Chelsea seek to crack America

Chelsea seek to crack America Chelsea are planning to become the most popular European club in America with a new strategic alliance with one of the driving forces behind Major League Soccer (MLS). The tie-up with AEG, which owns four MLS teams, will give the Premiership champions a foothold in a potentially lucrative market in terms of merchandising. It is also understood that Chelsea will have first option on a number of young stars playing in the American league, including Freddie Adu. The highly-rated teenager currently plays for DC United, which along with Houston Dynamo, LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire, are

Club America clubs Sounders

Club America clubs Sounders Club America may be based in Mexico City, but they definitely had the home fan advantage in downtown Seattle on Saturday night. In front of 10,200 fans at Qwest Field mostly clad in the distinctive yellow jerseys of Club America, Claudio Lopez scored twice to lead the Mexican powerhouse to a 2-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders. It seemed like they had three or four chances and they got two, Seattle coach Brian Schmetzer said. We

Leftists Lighting a Fire in South America

Leftists Lighting a Fire in South America Hey President Morales, you just came back from a summit with Americas arch enemies, Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez … what are you going to do now? That question was quickly answered Monday by President Evo Morales when he nationalized Bolivias national gas industry. The announcement came just two days after he signed an alternative trade pact with Cuba and Venezuela, and the bold move is sure to anger both President Bush and private energy companies that do business in the Andean nation. Morales immediately ordered soldiers to occupy Bolivias gas fields, and he told
