Beaver Creek Report: Oh Canada, Wow America

Beaver Creek, Colo. (Ski Press)-In the beginning, gloominess was in the air. There was Bode Miller sounding grumpy in a rambling Tuesday press conference, moaning about everything from the overcommercialism of the Olympics to having to wear his ski boots longer than he liked on race day. He’d lost some of his passion for the sport, he said, and burdened by all the non-racing aspects of ski racing – coddling sponsors, tussling with the media, fending of race administrators, and that sort of annoyance – he was just about ready to toss in the towel on the whole World Cup scene and call it quits.

At the same time, Daron Rahlves, the other half of America’s fabulous one-two punch, was saying that he, too, was seriously thinking about retiring after the Olympics. Both Bode and Daron on the verge of leaving the sport, and the World Cup season having barely begun? It was a bitter pill for serious ski racing fans to contemplate swallowing.

North America’s health care convergence

North America's health care convergence The recipe for humane, sustainable health care isn't complicated. You need a universal, publicly funded system to make sure everyone gets treated. Every government in the Western world understands this -- except two. And they both happen to be on this continent. Each has its own odd reason for ignoring the obvious. In Canada, our stubbornness is rooted in culture. This is a nation with a weak identity,

Car makers appear to be heeding KPMG, which says in a recent report 'a more practical, less self-indulgent era may be dawning,' JEREMY CATO reports Amid a swirl of sometimes gaudy displays, ear-busting music and glass-smashing entries, the good news for Canadians at the first big auto show of the season is that, as Ford's North American president Mark Fields put it, "Small is big in America." In this case, what's big in America is a boon for Canada. That's because Canadians buy small cars in abundance. Not Americans -- at least not until now. For the better part of two

U.S. leaders failing to keep America safe - report WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More than four years after the September 11 attacks, the Bush administration and the U.S. Congress have failed to take the urgent steps needed to protect the country, the former September 11 Commission said in a scathing final report on Monday. The former commissioners -- who wrote the seminal 2004 analysis of what went wrong before and after the 2001 hijacked plane attacks -- said the United States was still vulnerable to terrorism. It should, for example, make it a top national security priority to prevent weapons of mass destruction from
